  • Colorful pairings of sunflowers, lilies and more.
  • Exotic orchids in an array of autumn colors add attitude and sophistication to the home.
  • Best buys – blooming chrysanthemums make a statement in an array of colors.

After a summer season filled with bright colors its time to tone down a little but not too much. Our fall collection of flowers, plants and preserved designs has arrived in full force in jewel-tone shades like no other time before. Our cover look, Fall Favorites Bouquet, showcases the brilliance of this time of year with four outstanding hues – red, yellow, hot pink and deep purple. And don’t forget my personal choice of the Orchid Blaze Bouquet. It’s a look that’s all autumn – four different varieties of orchids in fiery shades of tangerine, yellow, browns with hints of burgundy here and there.

Look for the new September catalog in your mailbox the week of September 6th. I’m sure you too will be excited by all the new varieties and colorful combinations.

Otter Creek Gorge Preserve Hike

August 23rd, 2010

Having faced two cancelled hikes to Otter Creek Gorge Preserve we were wondering if this particular hike would happen at all for Sharon and her group of dedicated hikers. Otter Creek Gorge Preserve Trail is part of the Trail Around Middlebury (TAM), a 17-mile loop around the Town of Middlebury in Vermont. Sharon details the hike for us:

The weather finally cooperated and we made it to New Haven for a hike.  But once there, on a whim, we decided to do a different loop.  Same starting place but we traveled through Otter Creek Gorge Preserve instead of Wright Park.

We started out by crossing two suspension bridges over Otter Creek and its waterfall at Belden Falls dam.  Then we meandered through shady woods and past moss-covered ledges with Otter Creek often in sight.  At one point we scrambled down an embankment to a ledgy “beach” (slab instead of sand formed the shoreline).  This was just downstream from where the water rushed through the gorge and then spilled into a wider cove area.

Back on the trail, we continued through woods, took a detour on an un-mapped trail, then retraced our steps when that path ended.  We eventually came out to a road that we walked on for about a quarter-mile, and then climbed into a cow field via a double-sided ladder over a fence.  After about 5 minutes, we climbed back out of the field via another ladder and entered onto a woods trail with occasional tree identification signs posted along the way.

Soon we were back at the waterfall, recrossing the bridges, and making our way back to the parking lot for a total of about 4 miles.  It was another evening with great scenery and great company.

Making the Best Impression with Flowers

August 19th, 2010

Calyx Flowers began as a small idea of a flower company in 1988. Our founder, Ruth Owades was a true visionary as she developed the concept of sending fresh flowers direct from the fields in a box via FedEx. It had never been done before direct to a customer and it shook up the floral industry to its roots.  Here we are some twenty two years later and we are still specializing in sending the unexpected. Everyone that works at Calyx knows that it’s all about making the best impression with flowers.

The essence of every gift sent by Calyx Flowers is captured by the exciting collection of vases, cachepots and baskets I have chosen to accompany them. Inspired by my travels around the world, you will not find a more vast collection that so complements natural beauty.

When your special recipient finds a box from Calyx Flowers at the doorstep, it is our greatest intention for a very extraordinary floral experience to occur.

Have a wonderful day!

Hiking in the Hinesburg Town Forest

August 18th, 2010

Last week Sharon & her fellow hikers had a fun adventure, covering 6 miles, in the Hinesburg Town Forest.  Let’s see what she has to say about one of the best trail systems in Vermont.

We started out on a wide trail, climbing steadily for about 3/4 of a mile.  Then we veered onto a narrow woods path that led us to the top of an unnamed hill of about 1,500 feet elevation.  We could see hints of views of the local hills in between the trees and surmised that this would be a great snowshoe hike when the absence of leaves would better reveal the vistas.  The footpath continued along the ridge for quite a while before gently winding its way downhill.

There were a ton of switchbacks on the trail and it was amusing to see the paths almost touching one another in places as the route curved back on itself again and again.  The woods were pretty open with an understory of ferns.  Most of the way, we had the trails all to ourselves and deep into the hike a bicyclist came upon us (most of the trails were made by a bike club).

The final leg was done mostly in the dark and we opted to rely on our night vision rather than use a flashlight.  A barred owl serenaded us while we rambled along.  Eventually another biclyclist came up behind us, this one with a headlight on his mountain bike.  He made sure we were okay and assured us we were almost back to the parking lot.  And, about a dozen switchbacks later, at 8:45pm, we reached our vehicles.  Hooray to my hardy trailmates for easily tackling the “mountain” as well as taking the nighttime hiking in stride.

The Beautiful Blues in Delphinium & Lilies

August 17th, 2010
Delphinium & Lilies

Delphinium & Lilies

Every season is a new adventure and it’s always interesting to see what bouquets our loyal customers are going to pick as their personal favorites to send. One bouquet in particular has really taken flight since its first introduction back in Spring 2008 – Delphinium & Lilies.
From its inception this bouquet gained a large flower lover following and we’re never ceased by how many choose to send the bouquet for a variety of reasons – birthdays, anniversaries or just because. I think one of the most appealing attributes of the bouquet is the striking blue color of the delphiniums. They are tall flowers like lilies but they bloom in a profusion of blossoms graduated up the stem. Delphiniums are known to have dark or white small flower centers called “bees.” Too cute!

Flower Fact: the name delphinium is from the Greek word delphis, meaning dolphin, the buds being said to resemble a dolphin’s snout. (Flowers A to Z: A Practical Guide to Buying, Growing, Cutting, Arranging by Cecelia Heffernan)

Thus the combination of the casually unique delphinium surrounded by the pure white blossoms of Asiatic lilies makes for a perfect bouquet, perfect to give on any occasion. I hope you’ll enjoy this bouquet in the near future like many of the Calyx Flowers flower lovers. Have a wonderful day!

Calyx Flowers is getting ready for Christmas

Styling a Fabulous Holiday Bouquet

Styling a Fabulous Holiday Bouquet

Most people do not begin to think about Christmas until Halloween has passed us by but that’s not the case here at Calyx Flowers. We’re always thinking about gifts and we’re always thinking about flowers and now we’re thinking about Christmas and the holiday gift season too.

This past week we had our holiday photoshoot at the corporate office in Shelburne, VT. Lots of reds and whites filled the studio as did the fragrant scent of cedar. As each new bouquet was created the song lyrics – “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” kept popping in to my head. I hope you’ll be as excited as I am about the magnificent new bouquets and evergreens in a variety of vivid colors and flowers.

Now I just need to get my holiday plan in place for all the home and office decorating! Don’t we all?

Sisters’ Day is August 1st.

July 28th, 2010

With July almost behind us, I was flipping the calendar to see if there were any exciting activities in the month ahead. I noticed that the first Sunday in August is designated as Sister’s Day. So August 1, 2010 is officially the day to  celebrate being or having a sister. Surprise your sister this Sunday!

From HolidayInsights.com - Sisters are truly special and unique. Sure, we may argue and fight. But, when it comes right down to it, sisters are the best, the very best.  Celebrate Sister’s Day by spending time with your sister. Make it a special day in some way for you, and for her.

Would you like to send flowers to your sister? My recommendation is our colorful Summertime Roses.

Sunflowers!
Snapped a Close Up of Sunflowers!

Warm yellows with bronze and black centers make it easy to see why sunflowers are such a wonderful, showy summertime flower. I love to see them mixed in a bouquet with fun flowers like Gerbera daisies or sassy roses but I’m also partial to a big bunch of sunflowers in an interesting pitchers. I’ve created a look for our Summer catalog that will be finding its way to your mailboxes next week – check out the Sunflower Sensation Bouquet.

Sunflower Trivia
  • Did you know that there are over 100 different varieties of sunflowers?
  • Sunflowers are native to North America and Kansas is the Sunflower State (wild sunflowers are a weed issue there).
  • Sunflowers are grown in all shades of yellow, some varieties are rust and brown in color while others can be dyed a certain shade (we call those color enhanced).
  • It’s possible to purchase sunflowers in three of the four seasons (sorry winter) with summer being their predominant season.
  • A sunflower grown in the Netherlands holds the record for being the tallest sunflower in the world. It measured 25 feet, 5.4 inches. (Source: 2004 Guinness World Records)
