Halloween Paraders Make Merry & Money
By Nate | November 6, 2007
Join the parade? Me? But I’m just here to take some pictures for the blog.
Well, you never know when you’re going to be caught up in the merrymaking here at VTB, especially when United Way fundraising week happens to coincide with Halloween. I stopped by to snap a few photos but ended up as a parade recruit, carrying the Halloween tune boombox as my fellow paraders boogied their way through the buildings, accosting encouraging coworkers to donate to United Way of Chittenden County.
Led by an enthusiastic Mike Randall (guy in colorful outfit next to three-legged Anita Germain), the small but lively group managed to raise around $140 for UWCC while eliciting much good-natured laughter. The pictures don’t really do justice to the experience of seeing costumed characters bounce across an office, or through a large meeting, waving bags for co-workers to plunk their donations into. It’s like extortion by a brigade of clowns, but, hey, whatever works.
So three cheers for Mike and the rest of the Bear Crew members willing to strut their stuff in costume for a wonderful cause. That’s Being Bear. (And next year? I’ll definitely come in costume.)
Here are some more pictures of the parade:

Nancy Wong as an old-time cinema criminal*
(think “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?”)
*Nancy wasn’t able to make the parade but was kind enough to pose for the camera

Was Mike Randall supposed to be a random character out of an acid trip?

If I had to guess, I’d say he was a character out of Caribbean carnival or Jonkonnu parades, like Mr. Pitchy Patchy. (Only reason I know that is I made myself a Pitchy Patchy costume almost 20 years ago for a one-time-only Trinidadian fete we had here in Burlington…)
