Bocce at VTB

By Nate | August 14, 2007

Bocce ball on lawn at Vermont Teddy Bear CompanyI remember when I told a friend that I was starting at Vermont Teddy Bear, she asked, “Are you going to do bocce?” Bocce? The same game I used to see the old guys playing in Carroll Gardens 30 years ago?

Come to find out, yes, there’s an annual bocce tournament here. And sure enough, many a sunny summer day, you can look out any window and see some of your co-workers wasting their time hard at work on the lawn, pitching grapefruit-sized wooden balls underhand in the effort to…knock the balls around? Move their opponents’ balls out of the way? Cross a finish line?

OK, so I don’t know the rules. What I do know is that it’s somewhat of an institution. So how’d it start? When did people get (semi-) serious about it? And, uh, how do you play, anyway?
